In 2025, China produced approximately 960.8 million tonnes of crude steel, followed by India at 164.9 million tonnes.

The importance of iron ore pelletizing, however, varies by region. China and India have large integrated ironmaking industries, while Brazil is a major iron ore producer and pellet exporter. The Middle East is developing increasing interest in high-quality iron ore feedstocks for direct reduction, while Europe is focusing increasingly on high-grade pellets and DR-grade materials as part of its transition toward lower-carbon ironmaking.

Across these markets, one challenge remains relevant: how to produce strong, high-quality iron ore pellets while minimizing the amount of gangue introduced by the binder.

Bentonit has traditionally been one of the most widely used inorganic binders for iron ore pelletizing. It improves green pellet strength, dry pellet strength, and thermal stability. However, excessive bentonite addition also introduces silica and alumina, which can reduce pellet iron grade and increase slag generation during ironmaking.

This has led to growing interest in modified bentonite (bentonite extender/enhancer) and composite binders that can reduce bentonite consumption while maintaining or improving pellet quality.

1. China, India, Brazil, Russia, and parts of Europe and the Middle East, pellet producers continuously optimize binder systems to achieve the required pellet strength while maintaining high iron grade.

The challenge is particularly important when the iron ore concentrate has poor ballability, low grade, coarse particle size distribution, or other characteristics that require higher binder consumption.

1.3 The Main Problem: Bentonite Adds Gangue

Although bentonite improves pellet strength, it is not an iron-bearing material.

Its main mineral components contain significant amounts of silica and alumina. When bentonite dosage increases, these components enter the pellet together with the iron ore concentrate.

This can lead to several problems:

Lower iron grade

More bentonite means more non-iron-bearing material in the finished pellet, potentially reducing its iron grade.

Higher slag generation

Additional silica and alumina can contribute to increased slag formation during blast furnace ironmaking.

Higher flux and energy requirements

Changes in gangue content can affect the overall burden composition and ironmaking operation.

Reduced process efficiency

If poor-quality or high-dosage bentonite is required to compensate for difficult pelletizing conditions, the benefits of improved pellet strength may come at the expense of overall process efficiency.

Therefore, the objective is not simply to find a stronger binder.

The real objective is: To achieve the required pellet strength with the lowest practical binder and bentonite dosage.

2. Why Is Reducing Bentonite Consumption Becoming More Important?

The demand for high-quality iron ore pellets is increasing as ironmaking plants seek better burden quality and improved process efficiency.

This trend is visible across different regions for different reasons.

China

China has the world’s largest steel industry and a large integrated ironmaking sector. The optimization of blast furnace burden quality, reduction of energy consumption, and reduction of slag generation are important factors driving interest in high-grade pellets and lower-bentonite binder systems. China produced approximately 960.8 million tonnes of crude steel in 2025.

India

India is the world’s second-largest crude steel producer and continues to expand its steelmaking capacity. Its large domestic iron ore resources and growing pelletizing industry make pellet quality and efficient use of iron ore concentrate increasingly important. India produced approximately 164.9 million tonnes of crude steel in 2025.

Brazil

Brazil is one of the world’s major iron ore producers dan sebuah important supplier of iron ore pellets to international markets. Pellet quality is therefore important not only for domestic ironmaking but also for export-oriented production, particularly where high-grade feedstock is required.

Europe

European steelmakers are increasingly developing lower-carbon ironmaking routes, including direct reduction. This creates additional interest in high-quality iron ore feedstocks with suitable chemistry and physical properties. At the same time, some European steel production is shifting toward electric arc furnaces and scrap-based production, meaning the demand for pelletizing is more closely connected to the development of primary ironmaking and DR projects.

Middle East

The Middle East is becoming an increasingly important region for direct reduction-based ironmaking. Countries such as Saudi Arabia, Iran, and the UAE have significant steelmaking industries and growing interest in high-quality iron ore feedstocks. The regional focus on direct reduction makes pellet quality and suitable iron ore chemistry particularly important. Research and Industrial Development of Modified Bentonite

Research into composite and modified binders has increasingly focused on combining organic polymers with bentonite.

Studies have shown that adding small amounts of organic components to bentonite can improve particle dispersion and strengthen the interaction between bentonite and iron ore particles.

For example, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and other organic materials have been investigated for their interaction with montmorillonite, the primary clay mineral responsible for bentonite’s binding properties.

The underlying principle is that improved dispersion and stronger particle interactions can allow a smaller quantity of modified bentonite to achieve the same or better pelletizing performance.

This direction is particularly attractive for pellet plants facing one or more of the following challenges:

High bentonite consumption

Low pellet iron grade

Excessive gangue content

Poor green pellet strength

High return fines

Difficult pelletizing behavior

Increasing raw material costs

Demand for higher-quality blast furnace or DR pellets

7. Jianjie Bentonite Modifier for Iron Ore Pelletizing

Jianjie has developed a bentonite modifier designed specifically to improve the efficiency of bentonite used in iron ore pelletizing.

Rather than completely replacing bentonite, the modifier is incorporated into conventional bentonite before the binder is added to the iron ore concentrate.

The recommended addition is typically 1–5% of the bentonite, depending on ore characteristics, bentonite quality, and pelletizing conditions.

The modified bentonite is then mixed with the iron ore concentrate during the normal pelletizing process.

Potential benefits include:

Lower bentonite consumption

Improved green pellet strength

More stable dry pellet strength

Better pelletizing performance

Faster ball formation

More uniform pellet size

Smoother pellet surface

Improved fired pellet strength

Reduced fines generation

Potentially higher pellet iron grade

For plants looking to reduce bentonite consumption without completely changing their existing pelletizing process, this approach can provide a relatively simple way to optimize the current binder system.

8. Why Consider a Bentonite Modifier Instead of Completely Replacing Bentonite

For many pellet plants, completely changing the binder system may require extensive testing and process adjustments.

A modified bentonite approach can be more practical because it works with the existing pelletizing process.

The basic process is:

Existing Bentonite → Add Modifier → Mix Thoroughly → Add to Iron Ore Concentrate → Pelletizing → Drying → Induration

This means pellet producers can focus on optimizing the existing binder system rather than redesigning the entire pelletizing process.

The actual dosage and performance should, however, be determined through laboratory and industrial trials because ore mineralogy, particle size, moisture, bentonite quality, pelletizing equipment, and induration conditions can all affect binder performance.

9. The Future of Iron Ore Pellet Binders

As steelmakers worldwide pursue higher productivity, lower emissions, and better raw material efficiency, the quality of iron ore pellets will become increasingly important.

The future of pellet binders is therefore unlikely to be based simply on using more binder.

Instead, the industry is moving toward:

Kurangi dosis perekat

Lower gangue input

Higher pellet iron grade

Better green and fired pellet strength

More stable pelletizing operations

Better compatibility with blast furnace and direct reduction processes

Bentonite will likely remain an important component of pelletizing binder systems. However, improving its efficiency through modification and composite binder technology can help overcome some of the limitations associated with conventional high-dosage bentonite.

For pellet plants, the key question is no longer simply:

“Which binder should we use?”

It is increasingly:

“How can we achieve the required pellet quality with less binder and less gangue?”

Modified bentonite provides one potential answer.

Kesimpulan

Bentonite has played an important role in the development of modern iron ore pelletizing because of its strong binding performance, availability, and ability to improve green and dry pellet strength.

However, increasing demand for high-grade pellets, pressure to reduce slag and energy consumption, and the need to optimize raw material costs are encouraging pellet producers to reduce conventional bentonite consumption.

This trend is relevant across major ironmaking regions, from China and India to Brazil, Europe, Russia, and the Middle East, although the specific requirements differ by ore type and ironmaking route. Global steel production remains heavily concentrated in Asia, while other regions are developing high-quality pellet and direct reduction capacity.

Modified and composite bentonite systems offer a practical pathway to improve binder efficiency without completely replacing conventional bentonite.

By reducing bentonite consumption while maintaining pellet strength and thermal stability, this technology can help pellet plants move toward higher iron grade, lower gangue input, more stable pelletizing, and more efficient ironmaking.

For pellet producers evaluating their current bentonite consumption, the most practical starting point is a controlled laboratory test using the plant’s own iron ore concentrate and bentonite, followed by an industrial trial to determine the optimum modifier dosage and process conditions.

Learn how bentonite is used in iron ore pelletizing, its impact on pellet quality and iron grade, and how bentonite modifiers can reduce dosage and improve pellet performance.

[40,59,39

post-20649","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","category-binders","category-blog
["GET
