The more common silicon carbide in the market mainly includes black silicon carbide and green silicon carbide. Black silicon carbide contains about 95% SiC, and its toughness is higher than that of green silicon carbide. It is mostly used for processing materials with low tensile strength, such as glass, ceramics, stone, refractory materials, cast iron and non-ferrous metals. Green silicon carbide contains more than 97% SiC and has good self-sharpening properties. It is mostly used for processing hard alloys, titanium alloys and optical glass, and is also used for honing cylinder liners and fine grinding high-speed steel tools. Generally, silicon carbide with a relatively fine particle size of 0.5-3 mm is used in an electric furnace . Add silicon carbide binder to make briquettes and then use them in the furnace, which is easy to melt and absorb. When used in a cupola , the particle size will be required larger silicon carbide , so as not to be washed out by strong air currents. In addition, briquettes made with a silicon carbide binder are easier to store.

Silicon carbide is generally a fine powder and cannot be directly thrown into the furnace, so silicon carbide binder should be added to make briquettes. At high temperature, silicon carbide decomposes into carbon and silicon ions. Their chemical characteristics are to react with oxygen first, so they can reduce the oxidation of molten iron, and then melt into molten iron to become the crystallization core of graphite. Both carbon and silicon have a strong inoculating effect, so they are very helpful for the smelting of electric furnaces and low-carbon silicon molten iron. The amount of silicon carbide briquettes added is generally about 0.5-5%. Silicon carbide has been widely used in casting production, especially in smelting, it is very beneficial to increase the graphite core, increase the number of graphite balls in ductile iron, and improve the graphite form of gray iron.

Since the melting point of silicon carbide is very high, around 2700 degrees, it is impossible for briquettes made of silicon carbide binder to have such a high temperature in a furnace produced by ordinary casting. That is, at the casting melting temperature, when silicon carbide dissolves , it begins to gradually decompose and diffuse in the molten state , but this process is relatively slow, so the time to add silicon carbide binder briquettes in the furnace should be earlier than other alloys. Generally, it is added when the furnace material is smelted to one-third to half of the furnace, so that it has sufficient temperature and time conditions to decompose.
